Maybe when AI will make paintings we can get away from ranking art for how much money some investor is paying for it.
I don’t see why AI should change this. We had more than plenty decent artworks beforehand. Like you say, it was never about the artwork itself.
If anything, they’ll pay even more for the provenance story of “someone actually hand-painted this way back when”…
I don’t think “AI” is the solution to this, but agree that “some rich men chose to use this particular object for money laundering” isn’t the best way to rank artworks :)
There can be 100,000 rare Ferrari’s, but only one Starry Night. Art can be beautiful, unique and timeless. It is not always about investment.
