How was s2? I honestly didn’t hate s1, but I just kinda… didn’t care? Not enough to invest in season two, anyway.

I found out enjoyable enough to watch but mostly for the ambience and the pretty battles. Maybe I’m pre-spoiled because I know roughly what’s coming.

I felt pretty similarly about Season 2. It was better in some ways, but ultimately I am finding it very difficult to care about a prequel series that feels inevitable in its story beats. Not sure if I will watch Season 3. This is definitely now one of those shows that I’ll only watch if I can’t find anything else I’m interested in

Yup, in most prequel series you know where you’re going to land, so there’s a huge pillar of engagement (ie “what’s gonna happen?”) just kicked out from under you. That means the performances and character work need to be on-point or it just becomes “meh.” Like I said, I didn’t hate s1. Prettyboy Sauron was engaging enough, the dwarfs were fun, and the protohobbits had some heart, even if they were baffling in many ways.

However, nothing came together quite right. The Elves are aloof and unengaging, the plot is on rails, and the specific era of the setting was never really meant to support the weight of person-scale storytelling, so the whole thing just felt like an extended video game cut scene.

I guess I’ll watch more eventually, but I’m in no rush.

I think it’s quite problematic that we already know basically all of the good guy main characters are in zero danger. There are some new characters, but none have a strong enough characterisation to really make me care about what happens to them. They can spend as much money on the big battle set pieces as they want, but without any real stakes these just feel like boring CGI padding to drag the story out and milk the audience for more money. This show has nowhere near enough depth to justify five seasons.

It has great stories and it has god awful stories, kinda like season 1.

If you didn’t hate season 1, you’ll probably find plenty to like in season 2.

Celebrimbor’s story I think makes the season worth it, but otherwise up to you. (And there are other moments, but that’s the best character story.)

I had no idea it was getting a season 3. I’m kind of shocked. There was a little bit of Buzz during season 1 I guess but pass that I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone talk about it ever.

Suffered my way through season 1 up until the absolutely ridiculous conclusion. Season 2 flew past, and it didn’t seem that anyone in the world noticed. Season 3 is way past flogging a dead horse.

The show is extremely succesful. Just because a bunch of racists are afraid of black hobbits, doesn’t mean “the majority” hates it. They are just super loud. And ridicolous.

Edit: It’s the fourth most successful show on streaming services ever. Just saying.

I don’t care even the slightest about online troll rage over any given subject, including YouTubers desperately trying to squeeze ragebait out of any current event to drive up their numbers. What bothered me about Rings of Power was its shoddy writing, weird mechanisms to force the plot forward and the utter contempt for the original lore written by Tolkien (not a surprise, since many of the script writers openly stated they disliked Tolkien). I also found Galadriel to be a very difficult main character to sympathise with - she was just plain annoying.

Not many new shows that I dislike come to mind at present, since I don’t normally waste my time watching bad shows - Rings of Power was because a significant other wanted to see it (she was not very impressed either).

However, I do remember the awful writing in the last season of Dexter ruining the show. I also remember awful writing in the last part of Game of Thrones ruining it, though luckily that’s currently redeeming itself pretty well in House of Dragons. Stranger Things would have managed great with just the first two seasons. The later seasons had some good stuff to offer, but were kind of a rollercoaster in the quality of writing, and a lot of the nostalgia felt very forced. The Boroughs was nice, as a light-hearted, good old “seniors out on adventures” type thing. Fallout is still good. Silo was good, though I hope they’re not doing the eternal mystery baiting without ever resolving anything. Looking forward to the next season of For All Mankind, and recently rewatched Das Boot, which was even better as a miniseries.
