@Olap Just think, with £2bn we could just create a joined up network of cycling infrastructure across the whole the whole of #Scotland, leading to reduced pollution, a better/quicker environment & a happier/healthier population. What do get? Same-old, same-old #motonormative solutions for yesterday's World. #motonormativity

Ain’t nobody cycling to inverness in a few hours. Which already has a cycle path from Perth. I’m all for cycling, but the lack of dualing the A9 is an embarassment in the 21st century.

Dualling the A9 is a bad idea. I’d much rather they electrified the rail line up to Inverness which would provide the same capacity benefits for passenger and freight while being less environmentally harmful.

@Olap We could connect every town & village in Scotland with cycle routes as well as connected cycle routes within cities. These would transform our country. Dual the A9? A few folk get to Inverness 10 minutes faster. Priorities. #motonormativity #cycling

The A9 is a killer. One of the most heavily used single carriageway roads in the UK. We can (and must!) invest in both; it isn’t an either or and I reject your false premises and believe you are now debating in bad faith

@Olap I'm not debating in bad faith. The A9 may have a higher collision rate than other roads but drivers still use it. Conversely, cyclists are one of the least protected/most injured road user groups & huge numbers of people thus refuse to cycle. Lack of opportunity for cycling as healthy exercise leads to huge negative impacts on public health. Getting the nation cycling will be far more beneficial than dualling the A9.

With that we can probably agree to differ.

@geomannie @Olap@lemmy.world sorry Bob: you just used the same false dichotomy. It isn't an either/or, and you are now doing cycling a disservice

More fucking car centric infrastructure. Great…

Just one more lane bro! Just let me speed past at 95 in my BMW twatmachine bro!

Improve the buses, trains, and cycle routes and we won’t need this highly polluting, highly nature destructive, highly costly project.

Edit: this book is worth a read if you’re interested in transport infrastructure https://www.lifeaftercars.com/

Improving this road is good for buses, and many of the communities that said A9 buses service are not at all practical for bike connections because they’re just too isolated. As it is, the A9 is very dangerous and it’s particularly dangerous to pull on to, something buses have to do every time they stop

I’m absolutely in favour of reducing car dependency whenever possible, but we do have to recognise that cars aren’t the only things using the roads and they are also the traffic that generally relies on the roads being good the least
