So fun fact for anyone that doesn’t know, the original concept for the Borg was an insectoid race and this episode was supposed to be the initial lead in to a larger arc introducing them. Several factors, budget and the writers strike in 1988 chief among them, led to the original story being abandoned and eventually the Borg were reworked into what they are today.
That info is out there for sure, but I’ve always found it pretty shaky. Here’s what Memory Alpha has to say on the subject:
The Star Trek Chronology, 2nd ed., p. 290 noted: “Although Picard and company were successful in eradicating them, the parasites did send a mysterious radio signal, presumably to others of their kind. At the time the episode was written, this was apparently intended to lead to the introduction of the Borg in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s second season. The Borg connection was dropped before “Q Who” (TNG) was written, and the truth about the parasites remains a mystery.”
The “apparently” always trips me up, but maybe there’s a more definitive statement or there that I haven’t seen.
I’m pretty sure I saw something on the blu-ray special features about this? It was gonna be too expensive to have the creepy worm alien things as a recurring enemy so they made the Borg as a cheaper alternative.

In fact, macroeconomic theory would say that appreciation in real estate should be tied to the rate of interest, which in turn should be tied the rise of the price level: inflation.

But the authors expected that future readers would be able relate to the specific prices. Modern fiction authors avoid mentioning specific prices when they want their work to feel timeless.

Old Star Trek is really a series who you need to use your imagination to don’t notice the lame special effects, that’s something which was fixed in new Star Trek with high budget visual effects.
I’m showing my wife TNG in order and we just did that one yesterday. She was underwhelmed by the ultimate energy-being evolution of that species being a guy in a lycra bodysuit with visible seams.
Imagine doing pretty good then all of a sudden you’re out of work because one of your coworkers flips out and burns the place down. Now you gotta go months without pay in a competitive job market.

Yeah, you got it. The point of the episode was that it was a difficult, near-impossible decision but someone had to make it, and as captain it fell to her. Clearly she didn’t derive any joy from it, and I would imagine it weighed on her heavily for a long time after, but it did let her basically bring her longtime friend (Tuvok) back to life as well as a valued member of the crew (Neelix). Tuvok was both tactical officer and chief of security and was critical (in the grand scheme of things) to getting Voyager home safely. So “needs of the many” applies to both Neelix and Tuvok as well as the rest of the crew.
I’ll make the Tuvix jokes because they’re fun, but “Tuvix” (the episode) explores a really complex moral dilemma that, as far as I’m concerned, has no right or wrong answer.

I love Janeway she’s turning into my favorite capitain so far (after Picard). I’m on season 3 I started watching star trek from the beginning last year so please no spoilers. Yes, she had to make some tough decisions but killing Tuvix was no-brainer. Do it! He would have been ok with killing two people (please don’t give me the their alive inside him. They are trapped inside you Tuvix c’mon!) who (at least one of them) would be willing to give his life for the two. Needs of the many… Btw nice name I’d love an iced raktajino rn
