One day after discovery, Meta pulls facial recognition code from its smart glasses

I don’t trust Meta with anything.
One memo reportedly described releasing it during a “dynamic political environment,” when privacy and civil liberties advocates would be distracted. Last week, WIRED reported that much of NameTag’s machinery was already built into the Meta AI app, downloaded by millions of users, as early as January, even as Meta publicly said it had made no final decision about face recognition.
Sound likes a stellar company
I fucking hate them so much. Does anyone wanna stop using WhatsApp? No. Wtf is wrong with people?
As well you shouldn’t. Back at the beginning of the year the NYT dropped a bunch of leaked memos about such a feature and at the time Facebook claimed that they weren’t planning to release such a thing.
Now there’s actual code for it, and their newest leaked memos prove they actually were planning to release such a thing and even had planned to do so at a time when people would be distracted by politics or other hot button issues so they could fly under the radar and not face as much backlash.
I trust them with losing billions on fucking stupid ideas. Oh, the advantage of a Harvard education.
People must oppose “smart” glasses with cameras and microphones without compromise.
I wonder if there’s some way we could destroy these devices remotely.
This is the main reason why I haven’t bought Oakleys or RayBans. I will not support companies that agree to make their products spying machines. I bought SunGod instead - better on every front, with 1% for the planet pledge and B Corp certification. European (UK) - without shitty face recognition in them.
Bolle as well, if you wanted a pair that can both survive a fall and protect your squishiest organs from anything up to a bullet
look, having a little screen on my glasses? That would be cool, I don’t want a fucking camera and mic. Why would I want that? I don’t silm every second of my life and don’t want to.
Why would I want to risk a company like Facebook being able to see litteraly everything I do?
This is a great example of a company pushing a product because it would be convenient for them if it caught on, rather than because any consumer want it.
There are a bunch of glasses with screens available without the cameras and recording. Not terribly priced either depending on budget.
