The dog’s bubbles should read:
“But it must” “be lived” “forwards”
for consistent format with the man’s
It matches the speaker: The man is going backwards, the dog is going forward.
I get that part, but it doesn’t match.
“Life can only” “be understood” “backwards”
vs.
“But it” “must be” “lived forwards”
If you can’t see how that’s inconsistently formatted then I don’t know if an in-depth grammatical analysis will help you, so I’ll just point out that one is “3 words” “2 words” “1 word” and the other is “2 words” “2 words” “2 words”
Beyond that, look at the position of the subject and the modal, the “be” and the main verb, and the directional adverb.
It’s inconsistent formatting.
The dog is trying its best OK
I don’t think the point is how many words are in each bubble, but the direction they are going, and I don´t think butchering the dialogue to make it symmetrical would improve the comic at all.
If I had a complaint, it’s that the man’s backwards speech bubble begins in the middle, when I think it would flow better if it started at the far right and we did a full C-shaped route around the comic, ending where we began.
The point is the direction, yes, but the formatting is inconsistent. In what situation is the formatting ever “the point”? And yet it’s important nonetheless.
The way it is is what seems butchered. Using consistent formatting isn’t “butchering the dialogue”
I guess I’m confused because “formatting” to me means how text is presented: font, typeface, spacing, kerning, etc; and you are complaining about the text itself (words per bubble). You can say the rhythm isn’t symmetrical or satisfying.
At what cost are you willing to accept the improvement?
Because this was modified with Gemini AI, using that comment alone as the prompt.Disclaimer

Apparently at the cost of an entire town’s water supply and several tons of carbon emissions… 🙄
But if you’re referring to the speech bubble having two lines, one of them in the original did anyway so that’s a net neutral
It’s pretty much neutral for me also aha, and yeah I meant running up one of several TPUs of several servers of several pods of several clusters of my region’s copy of Google Gemini.
I did a bit of research on the scale of Gemini
As of last year, each TPU has 32GB of HBM VRAM; there are 8 TPUs in a host server; 32 hosts in a ‘pod’; in a mid-sized Europe hub of which there are several dozen, around 24 pods make up an inference cluster, which does one of image generation, coding etc.; several inference clusters in a regional cluster, and that is Gemini. Each regional cluster/hub around the world is essentially a livesynced copy of a Gemini instance.
The EU hub I researched had, last year, the rough equivalent of 250TB of VRAM and 1.4PB of system RAM.
But it backwards be understood must be life can only lived forwards
Or
Lived forwards life can only must be be understood backwards but it
I’m here because I just watched the Royal Tennenbaums. I’m so pissed off that they killed the Dog and I have to get this from my chest: This useless drug addicted POS killed the dog. Fuck you Wes Anderson.
