pretty much everything branded ‘hp’ and installed on a brand new hp pc can be ripped right out of the preinstalled windows. there might be some odd and rare case where a laptop’s specialized button or some shit might ’need’ a special program.. but i’ve not run across a damn thing inside an hp consumer pc that needs anything with ‘hp’ in the name in well over a decade.

then there’s probably one or more ‘hp’ things to disable in device manager, because you cannot disable the bullshit hardware identifier in bios that windows update sees and then downloads ‘essential software’ for. but disabling it here seems to help.. provided you also turn off all the hp-related services (stop, disable. not delete). you might even want to go so far as to create a script or bat to run as a task to stop and disable them on every startup or login.

note that because hp uses windows update to deliver some of their bullshit, you can run into their bloatware / spyware even on a ‘clean’ install from ‘genuine’ microsoft installation media.

if you have an hp printer and have the print and scan doctor installed or enabled, you can leave it alone.

tl;dr: never buy an hp consumer pc to run windows.

flashbacks from a time when I alone was essentially the entire IT at work (small company, yay). Had to uninstall HP apps from a laptop, there were like ~50 of them and each of questionable purpose. Most of the uninstall attempts said “Error! Can’t, because HP [other app] requires this”… Eventually, through trial and error, I managed to find the proper order to uninstall them all, and it took hours.

It would have been faster to just wipe & clean install windows, but user didn’t want to setup all his stuff again so… :|

Anyway, the laptop was WAY more usable after uninstalling all that crap.

You can actually disable the auto-download-via-windows-update mechanism in windows via a gpo. Would be nice if there was a toggle in settings but it does exist at least.

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Device Installation > Prevent automatic download of applications associated with device metadata
