How old is that actor now? Amazing that he’d still be in shape to play. Let’s see, the first movie was like 1997, so 29 human years…Would have been at least a year old at the time (probably more)… 210?!

I was surprised last year to learn that not only were there more than 2 “bud” movies, but my in-laws have every single one and they watch them multiple times a year.

It seems to be a sign of cultural stagnancy and decay that very little new media is getting produced and ascending into the mainstream. I’m not saying NO new media is getting made, obviously there is more than ever, but a ton of what makes it into wider public consciousness seems to be remakes and reboots and sequels and side stories of established IP from 30+ years ago.

The incentives for safe financial bets has killed the future of original media. Weep, weep for the future. We shall see Airbud 27 by the end of the decade.

We don’t just tell stories, we repeat stories and re-tell stories. It’s been happening since before literature or the stage even existed. Even the Odyssey wasn’t an entirely original story. Our very first records of literature are literally stories that were told and re-told and re-told and refined and reformed and re-told for generations. Re-telling stories is a fundamental thing common to practically every human. It’s what we do and what we are. It’s not the end of the world, it’s just the mortar that binds our individual experiences into civilization. You don’t need to weep, you just need more art and literature in your life, maybe fewer headlines about movies for toddlers.

If you’re bored with a story you’ve seen before, there’s a good chance it wasn’t made for you, let the people it was made for have it. I think I can safely say that the next Airbud movie wasn’t made for you or anyone here. I’m okay letting the kids have their Airbud movie without being snarky about it.

Buddy I’m not weeping for the retelling of stories. I’m weeping for the devolution of the modern Arts into perpetual nostalgiabait circlejerking in pursuit of profit.

There are MAJOR differences between “retelling a story because it’s a historical classic that still holds emotional and cultural value devades/centuries/millenia later”, and “rebooting a dead IP for nostalgiabait in order to try and make a shit ton of profit”.

The whole point of pursuing the Arts and Humanities, as I understand it, is to pursue NEW art and literature that evokes new emotion. Not just to pump out Airbud 27.
