Ever noticed how cult-like the AI community is?

Ever noticed how cult-like the AI community is?

In fairness, the argument that AI is a cult/false religion/false god has been made many times before, however I believe that AI and the AI community most closely aligns with a cult, and here’s why:

Indoctrination techniques:

Generally, techniques that indoctrinate users into the cult tend to follow similar trends, which are notable in many of the AI models having similar effects on the users who subsequently become frequent users of the technology. Broken down, I’d say it’s something like this:

-Innocuous beginnings: Cults are notorious for beginning the indoctrination process with something simple and seemingly harmless on the surface (I.e. conferences, videos, films, games, etc.) these are all real techniques that various cults have used in the past, to somewhat success. Likewise, AI chatbots, image and video generators present just this: an invitation to engage with something fun and seemingly harmless, something that engages the audience and draws their attention.

-Love bombing: Perhaps the most notorious hook of cults is love bombing — giving heaps of praise and complements to the joining members. Likewise, AI chatbots constantly tell you how good your point is or how you’re always on the right track (“you’ve hit the nail on the head”, “that is an amazing point” are but a few I have read of Gemini) This is undoubtedly a form of love bombing.

-Promise of more: Cults often work by enticing their audience with something good, but promising something great (something better) later. Likewise, AI tech companies are always promising more, more, more if you subscribe/follow their work. What better reward for AI users can there be but the promise of bigger and better AI? This is exactly how both cults and AI operate.

Beyond the indoctrination similarities, there are also many, many peripheral similarities (by which I mean subtle, not less important similarities) which include:

-reach and scope: historical cults have often managed to expand their reach across multiple countries around the world. Need I explain how this is similar to the reach and scope of AI?

-withholding/hiding information

-leaders who turn out to be crooks/criminals

-leaders who amass fortunes

And many more.

What do you think? Are the similarities superficial, or could AI actually be a worldwide cult hidden in plain sight?

I think, as a dedicated LLM hater, that calling AI a cult is overstating the case. But I will also point to the fact that some of the upper level drivers like Elon Musk are 100% motivated by Roko’s Basilisk, so.

Roko has a lot to answer for. These cretins are destroying the planet, and probably our entire species, because they’re afraid of a philosophical thought experiment. I wonder if that had never been written, or popularised we might be having an actual golden age of technology.

Stupid people taking that thing seriously is not fault of its creator.

That’s a fair stance. Certainly there are two sides to this debate

I’m in a weird middle ground where I know how to use it well because work requires it and I require a paycheck. But I also hate it and consider it a path to the destruction of everything.

You can present AI cultists with all the data and information available to backup how bad it is for their brain and society. It won’t matter. They write it off and call you either a Luddite or a hater. That’s what happens when you allow technology to dumb down your brain. No study or hard data is going to deter them from half-assing their way to everything instead of actually learning.

I agree. We are becoming far too dependent on these things

“The need to be observed and understood was once satisfied by God. Now we can implement the same functionality with data-mining algorithms.

You will soon have your God, and you will make it with your own hands.”

Are the luddites a cult? I’m thinking more and more of becoming a cult member if that is the case. I call your electronic digital typing machine and raise you a pencil and a cocktail napkin.

No we luddites aren’t a cult, but a movement. For fair share/payment, security at work and quality over slop.

The performative haters are getting desperate

Whats a performative hater though? And getting desperate for what?

That’s what their Ai called people when they asked it how to feel about this meme.

My predictive text tells me how to feel about things.

Just type a word and let it ride… on the wheel broke and it will crash on us and it will be the most dangerous thing we can do to kill ourselves and others and others that are not in their own interests.

You are right thats why people should run for the answer it directly but asked a baker to make a cake until you are right thats why I love elden dark souls redemption mit Tim Robbins würde ich dir zu mir zu mir zu mir zu mir zu mir zu mir zu mir zu mir

Getting desperate to have a normal functioning society instead of one flooded with slop?

Nah.

We have pattern recognition. You recognize some similar patterns between these 2 things. Nothing wrong with that, but doesn’t mean that it means anything.

In fact, most things you can find some similarities between. You could probably replace one of your 2 things with, say, “marriage”, and still go through the same points, and think of something to say about it.

It’s a fair point and it’s balanced arguments like this I find most engaging.

However, I do have to point out that in any case, even things which are the same start with similarities anyway

Your whole account and username is based on hating AI but it’s the other side that’s in a cult?

Fact is there’s has been a media campaign being run since it started so gen pop would clap and cheer when big AI companies capture the market with regulations. You just responded to it.

I’ll keep using it to lighten my work load at work and spend more time fucking around. Hopefully, Big AI loses even if they have your help.

I don’t use AI (much) I do occasionally ‘test’ it to see how it fares but that’s as much as I do; I certainly don’t use it for life stuff

My community is not exclusive for people who only hate AI; those who like it are welcome too

So you don’t use AI much, but you know exactly how everyone else is using AI?

Also is your entire argument about “AI”? Or LLM-based AI in particular?

Cult-like behavior could grow in any community, but shunning the tech itself for no other reason seems backwards?

And what alternatives do you have in mind, if not LLM AI, what would be your ideal next step towards artificial intelligence?

P.S. I hate billionaires and the AI bubble just as much the next person, but these black/white “AI bad” arguments are getting tiring.

To be clear: I read about what happens with AI in the news/on the internet mostly, it’s not hard to google ‘AI news today’ and see what’s going on in the world of AI, or go on Reddit/quora/Lemmy/whatever other boards for discussion they got, and read about people’s experiences etc. That’s how I know how other people are using it.

LLM’s and machine learning (as it is used today) and all other types/forms of AI.

Not really sure about your point of ‘shunning’. Nobody’s shunning AI, we’re having/encouraging/engaging in constructive debate about the nature of this. How can we shun something we haven’t fully scrutinised either by research or discussion?

Comments from other communities

I just saw a comment thread where OP posted a deepseek screen cap, then got super defensive when people pointed out why using even locally hosted llms like that are problematic. Then decided to quit lemmy after a year because of it.

OK now I’m convinced - hi madthumbs

The whole tech-bro billionaires sector is a cult. AI is just the latest of their gospels.

Nah. The latest is quantum computing.

I believe they are the cult leaders and they have subdued everyone below them who gets on board with them

WEll, subdued or bribed. Especially for the die-hard fans of some billionaires, I would not be surprised if it has every single one marking of an actual cult.

My point exactly 👍

I just saw an academic peer review paper comparing Trump to alegories from Godzilla movies.

I would not be surprised if there is a lot of academic and peer reviewed papers comparing how cults compare to tech-bro billionaires.

I’ve heard it said AI is a false god/religion before, I guess it’s no different to the argument it’s actually a cult

AI with its promises of things getting better and “love bombing” and other stuff rather looks like long forgotten classmate adding you on socials to get you into some MLM.

It’s not some closed community that cults usually are, there are almost no secrets to how AI works, or at least there are no claims that people in there know something most people don’t (which is characteristic to quasi-religious movements like MAGA).

It’s simply a big shiny new tech, that is on the height of its hype cycle, that is about to plunge into a valley of despair, which will filter out AI use cases, leaving actually legitimate ones and removing bullshit ones (and since there are so many of bullshit ones - that makes a bubble out of it).

No but they are promising bigger and better AI always. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be pummelling billions of dollars worth of research into it

I’m reasonably sure they’d say the same about us, honestly.

I’m not disagreeing. But I am pointing out that a lot of us refuse unilaterally to even discuss any good points about AI in a similar way to how AI lovers seem to never want to acknowledge the bad points.

I accept that AI has ‘good’ points, I just think the bad ones outweigh them

Same. But I see people get downvoted and dog piled on all the time for saying AI has any good points.

I wouldn’t worry about downvoting too much. It’s not like the AI algorithm’s gonna look through votes, is it? (Not least because the AI algorithm’s probably doesn’t exist on Lemmy)

Cults calling others cults? Haters gonna hate IG (not you, but cult members)

Have you ever met people in a MLM cult?

So if I use it at work to summarize the ten bazillion emails I get, does that mean I’m in a cult now?

Do I get a t-shirt or something for joining?

I wouldn’t know; I’m not a member of that cult
