Just imagining how shitty the indoor air quality had to be, with all those gas lamps burning just for light…

Then again, the outside air quality was probably even worse, with completely unfiltered coal burning being so common.

That’s why they toughened up their lungs with a full daily helping of Lucky Strike cigarettes!



It’s like that scene from Pinocchio. All that’s missing are the cigars and mugs of beer.


I always wondered what pre electric gas lighting looked like.

One rowdy moment with someone throwing something and the whole place is on fire.

A friend had an old cabin that had gas lighting. There was something surreal about it. The light is incredibly yellow and seemed to have limited wavelengths so the the colour pallete was distorted and very compressed. Also shadows didn’t seem to work the same way if that makes any sense. It was strange.
