Explanation: In the French Revolution, the French lopped off the head of their monarch, Louis XVI, and proclaimed themselves the (First) French Republic! Vive la France! Vive la liberte!
… eleven years later, the celebrated war hero and politician Napoleon Bonaparte held a referendum to change France back into a monarchy - under him, as Emperor of the French (and would later also proclaim himself King of Italy).
Funny enough, the anthem of the (First) French Empire, Veillons au Salut de l’Empire, explicitly calls for the downfall of all kings.
While this may seem a total reversal - and it is certainly at least a partial reversal of the high ideals of the French Revolution - it must be noted that Napoleon, though an autocrat and a man of great ruthlessness and infinite ambition, did still champion many of the Enlightenment era ideals which spurred the French Revolution forward in the first place to overthrow the old, semi-feudal monarchy of France in 1793. Napoleon remained a supporter of ideals like religious tolerance, meritocracy, rationalized governance, and public education.
Just not any of the revolutionary ideals that might interfere with his power, like ‘meaningful elections’ or ‘freedom of speech’.
I felt like the book The Black Count was a really enlightened telling of the reality of this time. It is a biographic of author Alexander Duma’s father who was a military star during the period ending in obscurity due to the empires bullshit, much of his life an inspiration for his sons writing. Highly recommend
