In reality, this success was far more personal than it seemed, for the company’s regional operations chief was none other than the Egyptian-born American Sam Ayoub.

With a broad smile beneath his thick white mustache, Ayoub stood and drank the first bottle of Coca-Cola bottled in Egypt after intensive rounds of negotiations he had begun in 1974 with his first visit to his homeland in nearly twenty years. These efforts included meetings with then Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, foreign minister Ismail Fahmy, and minister of housing Othman Ahmed Othman.
