Unfortunately the US is determined to make life hell for Cubans. The blockade has gotten worse and they’re being deprived of fuel and other necessities. Hell they can’t even get enough syringes for the covid vaccine they developed because of the blockade. So despite great advances in LGBTQ rights they are going to be starved out or possibly invaded in the near future.
I feel like China and the EU should collaborate to supply Cuba. As well as all Latin America.
I think Mexico is still providing them fuel but I can’t recall if they’ve been blocked from doing so atm. But yeah more countries should provide aid. I fear America will take a note from Israel’s playbook and block aid getting in similar to how aid is blocked from getting into Gaza

Obviously not, and this is just bad faith. Not even the tankiest tankie would argue this, and it also deflects from the causes of why things are bad in Cuba (hint: it’s got a lot more to do with their neighbour than anything they’re doing)

Complicated, I’d also say no, but this kind of statement is meant to imply that it’s some kind of totalitarian nightmare, which is ridiculous since it’s a massive improvement on the regime before it and also pretty easy to argue more democratic than, again, the country that this criticism is being made from.

Idk, I’m not gonna read the whole discussion very carefully so maybe I’m missing something, but I’m not sure why you think that having multiple political parties is identical to being democratic? To me democracy is about how individuals can actually have a say in a decision making process, and about how the will of the people is expressed in government policy and the law. I don’t see any reason why electing representatives within a party is necessarily any less democratic than having multiple parties.
Given the numerous studies that show how badly the policies of, really any western country except maybe a few tiny social democratic ones, actually reflect what people want (and even the nordics aren’t doing so hot on that front the last few years) I don’t really see how we can feel so superior about anything really.

I know very little about North Korea so I’m not willing to make any claims about it either way. I can tell you I don’t believe that western media or organisations will ever give accurate information about it, so I don’t buy many of the stories you hear. I’m also not saying that does make it democratic. We were talking about Cuba though.
In the interest of getting on the same page therefore, do you think people in the USA/Anglosphere or Europe are in free, functioning democracies?
I mean, even according to the Asher Fergusson indices, Cuba’s been making great advances on LGBTQ+ regards.

Recently came across this 1982 article about the religious right’s patron saint of government deregulation, trying to warn people about how fucked up the religious right was.
For some reason nobody listened to the man so often credited with helping to shape their entire political ideology, when what he had to say was in conflict with their entire political ideology:

Barry Goldwater at the end of his political career trying to warn America that the religious right had gotten it all wrong. Then coming to the realization that it was too late. Republicans never actually cared about small government, they just used his arguments to create a propaganda machine that destroys civil rights and liberties for their own profit.

I don’t know about tankies, or soviets, but I used to know a russian-american, who was born after the fall of the soviet union, who was born in America, but raised by his soviet era russian parents.
He didn’t make any qualms about it. He just hated gay people. He would come to my apartment, in Lakewood Ohio, second gayest cityin America, and out of nowhere he’d go off on an anti-gay agenda that was probably originally a joe rogan podcast.
He always got angry that I never agreed with him. I tried to let him be a better person. I tried to let him grow. I invited gay people over so he could mingle in a non-romantic setting, just to see that gay people aren’t your enemy.
He did not grow. He stayed quiet all night. And then left halfway through the show we were watching. He was happy to talk shit about gay people in my presense, knowing I’M not gay, but he also assumed I’m full of hate like he is. He was not so thrilled to try to spew his anti-gay agenda to an actual gay couple.
After he left, even though he hadn’t said much the hour or so he was here, Tom says “So that russian guy…..he hates gay people, doesn’t he?” I said “Yep”. And Tom says “And you were trying to show him there’s nothing to hate” I said “Yep”. Then he told me he appriciates me thinking of him and Jack as good people who would break mental stigma of hate, but also not to ever invite them to hang out with someone who hates gay people. I said ok, and then he said “He didn’t do anything, but from our viewpoint, he could have just as easily pulled a gun, or a knife. You never know what someone full of hate will do when you’re alone.”
I never would have thought of that. I know my (now former) friend isn’t violent, but they don’t. So I can see where they’re coming from.
But if you asked my former friend why soviets imprisoning gay people was a good thing, he’d likely say “Because they ainxt natural, what they’re doing. It’s immoral, and gross.”
I’m not agreeing with him, but you wanted to know what they’d say. These are the types of answers I heard.
Your friends are absolutely right in telling you to never do that again. It was an incredibly dick move to invite them to be the token gays around a bigot without telling them what’s up. He was 100% correct, you put them in danger without their consent or knowledge. Like, if you don’t profusely apologize and recognize what a completely fucking selfish and stupid thing you did by putting them in that situation, you may have done irreparable harm to your friendship with them.
Oh you thought if the homophobe was just around gay people he’d magically change his way of thinking? Are you out of your fucking mind? This isn’t a fucking game for us, it’s our fucking lives. Your Russian dipshit really could have pulled out a knife or gun and attacked, and you know what? It wouldn’t have been unexpected.
It’s like if you had a dangerous pitbull that had warmed up to you and you wanted to see how it reacted around other people. So you invited a bunch of people over without telling them they would be around a dangerous pitbull.

World was fucked back then. Western world was still forcibly castrating gay men and only in the past 20 years started to even allow gay marriage.
Cuba has made huge strides on this. The GDR (East Germany) was making big changes on this in the late 80’s. I’m sure if the USSR survived it would have too but who knows.
