Just FYI, most boards will ask that those attending refrain from clapping after every speaker so that the meetings can advance without interruption. These board meetings have agendas and some can last all day. If there was clapping after every speech, it could stretch the duration quite a bit, so the board usually sets limits on behavior in the room.
Im curious how many times they asked her to please stop clapping. Looks like they were warned multiple times.
Also, regarding the speaking too long arrest, the boards also set limitations on calls to the public. Its usually about 3 minutes or so. If they didnt set time limits, people could just jabber on all day and the board wouldnt be able to conclude their meetings and get to other agenda items.
The point is, be prepared, make your case, be concise, and respect the time of everyone there. You can strongly oppose flock cameras and give others a chance to also oppose them.
At least twice personally, according to the text shown in the video, plus a general warning in advance for everyone.
If you think it’s reasonable to use violence to make sure a meeting stays on schedule, I think there’s little for us to discuss. That sort of thinking allows the state to continue to do fucked up shit and peg those who respond with appropriate outrage as “being unreasonable” or even “violent.” See, for example, the viral video of a trans woman being arrested in FL for demanding a tiny modicum of respect.
Nothing changes by playing strictly by the rules because the people doing fucked up shit make the rules and they are designed to prevent change.
Every meeting is someone’s revolution.
The boards/councils are typically elected officials who the people chose to lead these meetings. You’re always welcome to gather your peers and tell the board members that that they should allow more time to complain. Another option is to run for office and set the new standard. This is why local elections are super important, and people should get involved with various levels of government instead of just the federal level stuff.
All of that is working so well. 🙄
ETA: the above is essentially the schoolhouse rock understanding of our political system. Unfortunately, it ignores the reality of a system designed to stymie citizens’ ability to affect change. Wait your turn, speak when permitted, get to vote for city council once every four years is a system where playing by the rules does nothing. Especially when over the course of those few years while attempting to oust those fuckers, numerous long-term damaging contracts can be signed and not easily gotten rid of by those who succeed them even if the political will is there. Yes, local politics is important, but being polite and abiding by all the rules is a sure means to get nothing done.
Who says you have to be polite? You can go up and speak your mind without being polite. You absolutely have the right to.
Not all elected officials are on 4 year cycles. You are discounting how soon you can affect change. It starts today. Go start your revolution and tell the people who represent you in our government what you would like them to do. They don’t know your side of the story until you tell them.
The problem is that speaking one’s mind within the limited frameworks provided does very little. In order to get a politician to pay attention you must, at minimum, make them uncomfortable or threaten their political future.
Here’s a concrete example of what “telling your representative what you’d like them to do accomplishes (received in response to a letter I wrote to my senator against KOSA):

We sadly live in the world we live in now due to the lies told to generations of children that voting is all you need to do and that the system is designedtoo uphold our rights. Can political pressure work? Yes, but it requires doing things that make politicians uncomfortable, which might include, God forbid, clapping at a fucking city council meeting.

I mean, what option do you have if the person just refuses to act right? From the explanation above, it sounds like they were making the meeting even more unbearable than it already would have been.
Making the meeting unbearable is the point. It is one of few ways us peons have to make our elected officials listen to our concerns. They’re not supposed to be comfortable. Again, if you believe it’s appropriate to use state violence against a person who is clapping, I think you’ve got some messed up priorities.
It’s not just elected officials there, it sounds like she was dragging things out for everyone involved.
For those who are hard of hearing or understanding: if you think that violence (as in laying hands on someone) is an appropriate response to being mildly inconvenienced, you have some screwy values and should have a look at that.
This is exactly what MLK was talking about re: the white moderate preferring a negative peace to the pursuit of justice. Fuck that noise.
