Sweden’s hidden rare earth deposits could help break China’s grip as Stockholm eases mining permits to cut reliance

Sweden holds some of Europe’s largest untapped rare earth deposits. Now the government designated critical mineral mining as a national security priority, a move that will speed up permitting for new rare earth mines. Officials cite reducing dependence on Chinese mineral supplies as the goal.
Instead of extracting one target metal, researchers are cataloging everything contained in Swedish mineral deposits. They will then develop magnets using those naturally available combinations, potentially reducing pollution, waste, and reliance on China.

Swedish researchers are exploring how the country’s mineral resources could support cleaner production of rare earth elements (REE) and the powerful magnets made from them. As part of the Sustainable materials and material flows research area, Martin Sahlberg is studying whether Sweden’s deposits could become the foundation for a more sustainable magnet industry.
Many of the materials needed for cleaner energy systems and advanced technologies are still produced through processes that carry significant environmental costs. Rare earth magnets, for example, are largely manufactured in China, where environmental rules and industrial standards differ from those in Sweden.

“In Sweden our possibilities for extracting REE, even when compared internationally, are relatively good,” he says.
Sweden has known rare earth mineral deposits in Kiruna, Bergslagen and Norra Kärr outside Gränna. Sahlberg’s work aims to create the scientific foundation needed to extract these resources domestically while also developing new functional magnets.
Rather than forcing Swedish minerals to fit existing manufacturing formulas, the researchers want to design magnets whose chemical composition closely matches the materials naturally present in local deposits. This approach could reduce the amount of processing required and lower the environmental impact of both purification and manufacturing.
“Today, China basically has a world monopoly, but we not only have deposits but also good access to water and relatively cheap energy. There is also an interest in leading the green transition here in Sweden,” he continues.

This should ease and accelerate the permit process for new extraction projects and help attract investments, according to Energy Minister Ebba Busch, who is also deputy prime minister.
“We believe that this can contribute significantly to both Sweden’s the EU’s and NATO’s defense capabilities,” Busch said, calling European industry’s dependence on China a “systemic risk.”
Busch also said the move would make it easier for the state to assign land for mining projects, an area of tension with the Sami reindeer-herding indigenous people, who say the expansion of mining could spell the end for their traditional way of life.

Four of the EU’s 47 strategic projects aimed at reducing mineral dependence on China are located in Sweden.

yeah and they’re all where people live so the government is gradually removing the right of local officials and interest groups to stop mining projects.
there is a huge supply of cobalt under the largest freshwater lake in western europe. there’s no way mining that stuff isn’t going to fuck up the water supply for a couple of million people.
but i guess it’s better than buying it from mines that use slave labor.

Many of them are in sparsely populated areas in the north, but on the natives foraging land, which is a whole different can of worms.
Not a problem for the right wing government, though. As long as they don’t have to build any unsightly wind power, they are more than happy.
If Europe is serious about not greenwashing by exporting all potentially environmentally damaging operations to China, then they’re gonna have to bite the bullet and accept some level of ecological damage. The key thing will be how well they limit said damage.

Which isn’t a bad thing, honestly. After all, if we want to talk about not ignoring external environmental costs, then this is the corollary of it — having society, via the govt, fund an industrial process so that it can be performed with reduced externalities.
yeah but this is a right-wing government, meaning they are also lowering taxes and taking loans to give money to international corporations without any revenue-sharing in mind. which means cuts everywhere else.

I agree that would be nice and probably the best option, but realistically that’s not happening. Given the situation we are in and the choices available to us, any improvement should be lauded instead of derided because it’s not the perfect solution.
Unfortunately mining operations are always ecological catastrophes no matter where they happen. Reduce, reuse, recycle is the only way to reduce it at least a bit.
Mines are not the problem. Rare earth’s are everywhere. However they are in low concentrations and so we don’t bother to extract them from ores when we mine something else. That refining tends to be an ecological disaster as well.

initially Australian rare earth miner Lynas could not get approval to process in Australia, so they shipped the raw ore to Malaysia and contaminate the jungles there.

As of this year, the Msian govt has agreed with Lynas to move the dirtiest bits of the processing chain back to Aus within 5 years.
Thus far, there hasn’t really been any ecological damage from the processing. Radioactive waste, but that was expected and will be stored safely.
It’s not necessarily nuclear waste. It’s mostly uranium and thorium, which can be used as nuclear fuel. So it’s a byproduct that can be enriched to be used to fuel NPPs–or rather a product that occurs naturally at the same places as rare earths metals and is inevitably mined with them.
Likewise, REMs are a byproduct from uranium refinery. In the future, they may even be recovered from spent nuclear fuel rods (as fission products).
The main problem with REM refining is the chemical process and environmentally toxic chemical waste.
