If VW was interested in actually producing cars people want to buy, they could have done so for many years now.
You don’t want to buy a Golf R32? What’s wrong with you?
Their BEVs are pretty solid though. Unfortunately they’re way too expensive, so they’re only interesting as a company car. The id7 pro station wagon is currently one of the best EVs on the market.
Volkswagen has a lot of actually cheap EVs too. The issue is that those are versions of their European models with less extras and only available in China. Honestly I am suprised they do not sell those in Europe. Hell they could even just badge them Skoda or SEAT, if they want to move the brand Volkswagen up market.
Which is part of their active decision. Economy of scale effects would make stuff cheaper. Instead they intentionally focused on low numbers of expensive cars with bigger profit margins while for years rejecting every reasonable EV production line that could compete with their beloved CEs.
The new electric Polo is at a quite attractive price, and seems to be a fantastic car.
The e-up! also was at a quite attractive price - but they only allowed people to order it for like 2 months and then the ‘production queue was filled up, so no reservations for the next 12-14 months’
The China market is gone anyway
