Given the high degree of McGuffinness of the portable emitter, you’re probably right. I’d still think it would be difficult though. Your guts are never quite in the same place when you move so the emitter would still need to adjust for our humanoid stretchiness. And if Voyager’s big gel-packed computer core couldn’t do the calculations, I’d have trouble imagining this tiny gadget could do it while also being the power supply. Even while factoring in that it is future tech brought backwards in time. But that’s more of a feeling on my part than a scientific argument.

We know about Jim’s premonition from Star Trek V, but for Sam to refer to it as though it’s some kind of family curse you’d think there’d be some history behind it. George Kirk is alive and well in this timeline, as they reminded us in the episode, so this seemed like a strange line to me. Maybe there’s a history with generations prior to George? I don’t think it’s ever come up.
There’s a weird incongruity going from the show examining Starfleet’s shortcomings in inhumanely separating Caleb from his mother and how it ruined his life, to them gleefully violating his bodily autonomy by putting him in different clothes, cutting his hair, and doing a medical procedure on him without consent, let alone informed consent.
IMO there should have been a time skip between Nahla getting Caleb out of prison and the start of courses. It doesn’t make sense that Starfleet would only start looking for an Academy director weeks before courses are about to start, and this would also give Caleb time to soften to the point he crumbles from Lura Thok (because she’s tougher than any other Starfleet person he interacted with in the timeskip, rather than yet another loudmouth warden) and to have consented to the academy so the violations of bodily autonomy would be less grating.
It is genuinely fucked up to take someone abused by a prison system, offer them a military1 posting as the only way to stop being abused, and then to think about it as a kindness while treating their mental response to that as something to iron out. Very 20th century USAmerican.
You could still have whatever tension they are going for with Caleb missing 15 out of 21 years of a healthy childhood, all the mischief and disrespect for authority he picked up from that (possibly not handled), and even still have Caleb feel resentment because he felt he didn’t have a choice but to join the academy to pay Nahla back.

I would disagree with the translator. On the surface, yes, but it is incredibly far removed from how any of our translation technologies work.
The universal translator works by scanning your mind/brain signals, finding universal constants within it, and then constructs a translation that way. In theory, a novel alien could be parked next to a universal translator, and it would still be possible to translate for them, in the absence of a linguistic database.

There’s definitely a feedback loop going on, since Dr. MacDonald is whom they bounce their ideas off of.

IIRC, it’s like the Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Hyperdrives. Once you get into spore-space/hyperspace, you get an infinite amount of choices to navigate through, but if you can figure out how to figure out your path, you can exit where you want. Though unlike the Heart of Gold, which tests every single possibility and impossibility simultaneously, the later iterations of the spore drive take a bit more after Dune, where a navigator can commune with the mycelial network and divine the way the ship should go, rather than needing inordinate amounts of computing power to brute force the solution.
How the ship is moved along the network after the navigator figures out the route is left as an exercise for the reader.
Although it might go both ways these days, since it wouldn’t be at all surprising if newer writers heard of Alcubierre’s warp drive, and incorporated that into Star Trek as a mechanism for how it works.

The spores are from the mycelial network, an organism/structure that exists in a subspace domain, and like subspace, is spread/connected throughout the universe/multiverse. The spore drive shifts the ship into that subspace domain, and uses the mycelial network to route the ship to the appropriate destination.
The closest things that might apply is the hyperdrives in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, or the space-folding drives in Dune, where you have a spanning extradimensional network that you can use to get to your destination, as long as you can find the right set of routes to get to where you want to go.

Please enlighten me as to what scientific theory you are getting the yes part of your answer from. Because I read through your linked Wikipedia article and couldnt find anything about how a spore drive could even be theoretically possible. The spore drive is purely techno babble. The warp drive on the other hand, while being mostly techno babble, has some grounding in actual reality and scientific theory.
