The Addams Family by Charles Addams

The Addams Family by Charles Addams

Continuing with last week’s theme of putting the child of woe to bed, here we have Gomez doing This Little Piggy on Wednesday’s toes, as Morticia looks on while learning on the wall just inside the doorway.

“This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home, this little piggy had roast beef, this little piggy had none, this ltle piggy went wee wee wee all the way home, and this little piggy…

For anyone familiar with the show, there is octopus art on the foot of Wednesday’s bed, Pugsley had a pet octopus.

As an aside, does anyone know what the font used in the caption is called?

Matrix by Emigre – definitely not the original font, Matrix wasn’t created until 1986

Yup. Specifically, the Matrix II Tall OT Reg font: note the below-the-baseline ┰.

And that very unusual lowercase ‘g’. https://www.emigre.com/Fonts/Matrix-II lets you compare them all.

I think the OT variants are missing there. The closest, Tall Regular, is not quite the same, the T is prolonged rather than moved. I found Tall OT Reg at https://fonts.adobe.com/fonts/matrix-ii#details-section%20matrix-ii-ext-ot-narrow

Here is the strip from the book Addams Family Album published in 1947.

This book was published in 2010, not surprising they used a modern font.

Gotta admit, this is the first of this series to make me genuinely laugh out loud :-)

I’m not familiar with TLP as a children’s goodnight tale, I think the Czech version uses peas rather than pigs. What’s funny about this variant? Or just the juxtaposition of this being the well-known (not back then) horror family?

Joke is, that he’s counted six toes on her foot. Normally TLP stops at the one that went home.

  1. This little piggy went to market,
  2. This little piggy stayed home,
  3. This little piggy had roast beef,
  4. This little piggy had none,
  5. This little piggy cried “Wee! Wee! Wee!” all the way home.

The joke here is that Gonez keeps going, suggesting that Wednesday is polydactyl.

I completely missed that, thanks for the clarification!

Thank you for reminding me of The Addams family. There’s a lot of gold in there for editing.

Is the wall art a reference to some deep lore, or just random weirdness?

The creature on the left appears at least similar to the creature toy near the bed. I believe the humanoid is seen in other art elsewhere, but I will not swear to that.

looks like Mark Gruffalo

How far would this game have went if the text didnt stop there?

These comments have been unusually educating for a simple comic strip.

Does this mean Wednesday canonically has more than 5 toes?

Well, at least one one foot. She might still have ten total, ofc.

This does appear to be the suggestion. The Addams Family are known to embrace the unusual in their family instead of shunning it.
