And I mean actively post on it, not just browsing it for info and guides and such.
For me personally there’s a handfull (namely two) small subs that are just too niche to gain any reasonable traction on Lemmy (yet).

The fediverse just isn’t there yet. I do fundraisers yearly and I’d never make goals on Lemmy / piefed. I am trying hard to be part of the solution, though, recommending it all over.
That’s why I like the +1 approach. If you post something on a big tech platform, post it on the fediverse as well.
I don’t expect mainstream adoption of the fediverse soon, but people shouldn’t be forced into a walled garden to stay informed/entertained.
Yes this is great advice because then when people do come take a look, there’s actually content and engagement going on.

I browse one niche community weekly, though I don’t comment or post. Lemmy isn’t entirely there yet, though it’s certainly caught up in the drama department.
It really has, hasn’t it? Also, people seem a bit shittier than when I joined a few years back. Inevitable, I guess, but despite the low numbers I liked the fact that people mostly behaved liked grown-ups.
More and more redditors coming here. Not just the nice well meaning once.

Local city sub, it’s the best place for news and events. I have dwindled down on posting or commenting, trying to find alternatives so I can fully drop it. Unfortunately, Facebook is still heavily used for events and I’ll take Reddit over Facebook.
Unfortunately the music communities here aren’t active enough. By which I mean the ones dedicated to music production, songwriting, etc. The Reddit communities aren’t what they used to be but they’re still fairly active, so after about six months of Reddit detox I made an account that’s the same name as my music project, strictly for the purpose of feedback, promotion, and networking with the artists that are still there.
And even in those communities, once robust discussions among pros and semi-pros have given way to bickering about AI, worthless “listen for listen” posts that don’t get you actual followers, and amateurs who can’t understand why their video of them poorly singing their dogshit song on their Walmart guitar didn’t instantly get 1000 streams.
But still, it’s someplace to go for now. I’d love nothing more than to learn of the existence of other active communities where one can talk with competent musicians, get meaningful criticism, and obtain followers who actually appreciate you as an artist.
I don’t venture outside of the music communities. At. All. Aside from this, Reddit is dead to me.
Yup not a single active DJ/production community here. I even tried getting an unofficial radio station going (and still want to someday, !radiolemmy@lemmy.blahaj.zone is the official community) but was hard pressed to find anyone willing to DJ or even submit their own music for airplay. So at this point if I ever get the project going again I’m probably going to have to recruit some redditors to at least get the station on the airwaves again.

None of Lemmy is active enough when compared to Reddit. It’s a shame really, but if you’re into anything moderately niche Reddit is the best place.
I don’t post on Reddit, and haven’t logged in since I left, but I do occasionally browse some niche subreddits that don’t exist here and do do site:reddit.com searches for information on Web search engines.
Niche communities, like everyone else.
In my case, I am very into Genshin Impact. Lemmy has a very small Genshin community as it is, whereas Reddit has specific and very active communities for leaks, lore, and particular characters. There’d have to be a mass migration to Lemmy for any chance of that quality of discussion and theorycrafting coming here, and I’m not holding my breath.
If I had the free time to moderate it, I’d make a leaks community here, but I don’t. So it is what it is, and I will continue to visit Reddit until it becomes unusable for me.
For the same reason some people use FB, TikTok, Twitter, etc. There is content on the platform that they enjoy and can’t get elsewhere.
It’s not a hard concept to understand and there isn’t any legitimate reason someone else might care that they use a particular platform.
Company and community subreddits for products I use and contests/giveaways. Also there are people on there I can help that I used to do in a professional way, but because of my health, don’t anymore, and it gives me a sense of… accomplishment? Constructive and creative fulfillment that people on Lemmy just don’t need/seek out.
I used to help people too. Until I noticed most of the people I was helping were actually bots, and they never responded or interacted at all. Or if I ever did encounter the odd human, they were radicalised and angry from being bombarded by negative rage bait and would lash out.
That is where a decent community helps, but doesn’t get rid of the problem. Most of my help was around software and people having issues and having worked in that field I just avoid posts with certain warning signs or ones that trigger me. Also helps that I block and avoid accounts and subreddits that set me off. Mind you I have quit reddit for Lemmy once only to find the contests that were on reddit that were appearing on Lemmy were bot posts and not valid, so I had to rejoin and my original username and karma reset.
I’d actually like to, even though it’s awful. There were still some niche subs I enjoyed, but like many, I got randomly banned from a sub, and my naive assumption that I could just use another old throwaway account, like back in the day, apparently made things worse, and now I’m permabanned.
At first, I played cat-and-mouse with VPNs, private browsing, etc., but they’re weirdly sophisticated once their bots and mods have marked your card, it seems, and each new account would always get banned for ‘ban evasion’.
Niche communities are the only reason I visit still.
I do occasionally comment, but it’s been severely limited since June 2023.
I can’t poison the AI if I don’t post utter falsehoods to reddit.
Once every few weeks I check my local city sub to see videos of methheads attacking people and keep up with what people are whining about.
I still occasionally check a handful of communities related to legal/visa/tax/business in Japan. We tried to get people to move over here, but they didn’t and, without the institutional knowledge of long-timers, just starting a community doesn’t accomplish much.
Sports
Completely anecdotal, but I think major subs here have some very active mods with some pretty crazy opinions and like to power trip. Those mods would usually get flushed out over time on reddit.

I use it for porn. Thats it. And if they lose even a single other porn subreddit that I’m into I’ll quit it entirely.
The only reason I use reddit for porn is because fedinsfw.app honestly sucks. It was made to replace lemmynswf.com but it doesn’t even hold a candle to it.

Very occasionally I look at reddit. Not so much for the local community (though it’s very busy on reddit and dead here I was ok giving it up) but because occasionally people respond so late to posts I made. I was on there for about 16 years before leaving for here, mostly because the scale of reddit just got inhuman.

I’ve been on Reddit for decades so there are dozens of niche subs I subscribe to. Reddit is so heavily populated that obscure games like openXcom and Guild 2 have a sizeable community. And the Hitman sub has more people than the official, Steam, and fan forums combined. I don’t think there’s even a Hitman instance on Lemmy.
I think though that Reddit will screw the pooch before too long and there will be a mass migration. Lemmy has a good chance of being where everyone goes.

Because I stated a sub there that’s become a great community over time and I don’t want to leave it until I have to. Did I bring it here? Of course. But almost no one came with. So until I can’t anymore, I’ll keep it going for those people.
I block the communities that are about even reposting reddit.
If Lemmy had the user base for it, I’d love to give up on Reddit entirely and not give them the satisfaction. Alas, if I want to see detailed write ups for strategies in a video game, I have to use it.
