Hunter-gatherers in Siberia died of a plague outbreak 5,500 years ago

If the plague started in Siberia and gradually spread west over a few hundred years before decimating the early European farming communities, that might explain why Yamnaya steppe herders were able to move in from the Pontic steppe and repopulate: they would already have recovered from the plague a generation or two earlier.
